4) Using a retractable metal tape measure, measure the front of the rod only across the front tip to tip for width. Do not include in your measurements the brackets at the ends of the rods and overlaps in the middle. Use this measurement as the width to order or purchase new drapes.

5) Determine how long you want your replacement drapes. This is an aesthetic decision. You want to balance the height of the perceived window (and the drape becomes part of the window) with the rest of the room. Place your tape measure on the top center of the rod down to where you want the drape to hang. On custom drape rods, place the tip of your tape measure on the top of the clip beneath the rod down to where you want the drape to hang. In order to adequately cover the window to provide incoming light reduction and privacy, measure 4” past the bottom of the window casing. If you would like your drapes to hang down to the floor from your “custom rod” place the tip of your measurement tape at the top of the clips beneath the rod down to 1” above the floor or carpeting. To have your drapes hanging from the ceiling down to just above the floor or carpeting, place the tip of your measuring tape at the top of the clips beneath the rod down to 1” above the floor or carpeting. Use this measurement as the height for your new drapes.

Fire-retardant Drapes for your Home

While all commercial spaces need to meet strict fire codes, homeowners don’t have such restrictions. Common sites requiring fire-retardant window treatments include any public domains such as schools, colleges, senior housing, theaters and stages, meeting halls, churches etc. However, with the holidays around the corner, your fireplaces, candles and Christmas lights will start getting some use and many people feel safer having their draperies in fire-retardant fabrics.

In the U.S., the most widely followed standard to determine fire resistance in drape and curtain fabric is the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 701 standard. Under NFPA 701, drapery fabric is tested by burning a small sample and measuring the flame, char length and flaming residue. If a fabric is not sufficiently flame resistant to meet a standard, the fabric is labeled Non Flame Retardant (NFR). Fabrics that meet a self-extinguishing standard are categorized as Flame Retardant (FR), Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR), or Durably Flame Retardant (DFR).

Flame Retardant (FR) type of fabric is woven with threads such that, initially, the fabric did not meet fire code. In order to meet fire code, the fabric was treated with a flame retarding chemical so that the end product does meet code.

Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) type of fabric is woven with threads (fiber or filament) that yield a product that meets fire code without any further treatment or finishing such as monoacrylic fiber. Additionally, the safe expectation is that the fabric will remain sufficiently flame retardant for its lifetime even after repeated washings.

Durably Flame Retardant (DFR) type of fabric is woven with threads that are flame resistant but not enough. Instead of adding a FR chemical to stick to the surface of the thread, however, the manufacturer adds an FR compound that chemically binds with the fiber composition. The FR chemical not only is bound to the fabric chemically but is not water soluble and, therefore, cannot be removed from the fabric by washing (except in a special chemical bath).

Beware of buying fire-retardant drapes and curtains that are chemically treated. The fire retardancy on those will disappear when they are cleaned.

Fall cleaning your home is just as important as the traditional spring cleaning. Now is a good time to deep clean your house for a healthier and comfortable winter home. During fall cleaning, curtains and draperies are often overlooked. This happens because the window treatments still look clean even though they’ve been hanging for years.

Draperies and curtains may not show soil for years and a lot of people believe drapes should only be cleaned when they look dirty yet drapes collect an immense amount of dust, oil, pollution, smoke, pollen, heating fumes and bacteria over time. That’s why drapery cleaning is certainly a necessary part of your fall cleaning.

In general, it is advisable to clean your draperies as seldom as possible to prevent ruining the fabric. When it becomes necessary to clean them, however, professional dry cleaning is the preferred method. Only a small percentage of fabrics can be laundered. The tighter the weave of the fabric, the more stable the material should be in cleaning. All cotton fabrics are generally not as stable as a mix or blend in terms of shrinkage. For example, cotton/polyester or cotton/rayon are good choices for stable (prone to minimal shrinkage) drapes. You will want to find a cleaner that has some specialization and experience in cleaning drapes. They have equipment specifically designed for draperies. You can also have an on-site drape cleaning specialist come in to your house to clean and freshen your drapes. These professionals inject a specially formulated solvent into your drapery under pressure and extract the chemical, leaving your drapes clean. This special process results in no damage or shrinkage to the material.

You should regularly clean your drapes to preserve their life. While using a brush attachment on your vacuum, run it “lightly”up and down the folds and pleats of the drape to remove dust and particles. Weekly vacuum is best but if that is not possible, vacuum your drapes at least once a month. You can also “spot clean” most drapes with a damp soft cloth that has been wrung out. Do not use soap or detergent as is may leave staining around the spot. Dab away moisture with a clean cloth, air-dry. If the fabric has water spots, fade them with the steam from the garment steamer or iron. Use Febreeze to make it smell fresh and clean.

Why should I use eco friendly window treatments in my home?

The move towards sustainable and eco friendly elements in the home is undeniable. “Green Home Building” has become the norm in most communities as more people recognize the need to take measures to protect our resources. There are several reasons why you should consider using eco friendly window treatment in your home.

*Windows take a large amount of wall space in your home, and therefore their coverings will as well. If you use natural drapes and environmentally conscious products on a large surface area such as your windows, you are making a big difference in the carbon footprint of your home.

Whether you want curtains and draperies, or custom valances, window coverings can be a large part of your decorating budget. Since window treatments cover such a large area in any room, you want to make sure that you choose wisely and get the best value for your money. Here are some great tips on how to choose window treatments and save money!

Pick the appropriate window covering for each room.

You will want to think about what purpose the window treatment in your room will provide. Is it all about privacy, or are you simply wanting to add warmth and style? Do you need both? Do you need insulated drapes or curtains for energy savings? Once you answer these questions, you can narrow down your choice. The most common window treatments are curtains, drapes, blinds and valances.

Curtains

The words curtains and drapes are often used interchangeably. Curtains tend to be more casual, and are usually gathered on a rod. They are well suited for more relaxed rooms such as bedrooms and dens. Curtains tend to be made of lighted fabrics, and don’t block the light completely.

Drapes

Draperies are usually a more formal window treatment for the home. They are often lined, and are good at blocking sun and keeping out cold. Draperies can be pleated, tab top or grommet. Some require specialty rods. Draperies are a good choice for living rooms, and are often made of more substantial fabrics.

Blinds

Blinds are very common today, due to their ability to control light. They are wonderful layered underneath other window coverings for their practicality. Installing blinds alone can leave a window looking unfinished and cold.

Valances

A valance is decorative fabric that tops a window. Its purpose is merely to add style, color and warmth to a window that does not require privacy, or to dress up another window treatment. They come in hundreds of fabrics and several styles, ranging from formal to very casual. They can be an inexpensive way to add that special custom touch to your windows.

You have a couple of options on where to buy your window treatments once you have a plan. Your local department store offers a variety of styles, but they tend to be the more expensive choice. Design Tip: Scenic Windows

Do you have a windows with a great view? Or simply want to have more light in the room. We generally recommend that you add an extra 3 inches on each side of the window. This will have the drapes partially block the window on the sides even when the drapes are fully open.

If you want the entire window to show when the drapes are open we recommend adding an extra 25% to the custom drapes. So if the window was 100 inch wide you should look at getting 125 inches of drape. Be sure to also have a bar that does out far enough to let the drapes get out of the way of the window.

I remember when I was a teenager and my mom was redesigning the master bedroom and inadvertently taught me a key design principal that I still use today. When she sought out to redesign the master bedroom she spent weeks looking for a vase. She went to swap meets, IKEA, malls, thrift stores, antique shops, and any where else that home decor pieces. She finally found a vase that was exactly what she was looking for. Within a day she was buying paint, furniture, drapes, linens, lamps, and other trimmings needed to fill the room.

What she did was use this one vase as the focal point of the room and design the room around the vase. What a novel idea! Instead of trying to envision the entire room before you even have everything, simply buy one piece and build around it.

We are happy to announce that we have added four new fabrics to our increasingly growing repertoire. The style of fabric is called Chenille Velvetine and is a 100% polyester Velvet material. It comes in Black, Brown, Claret, and Navy. It is heavy, soft, durable, and blocks out most of the light.

An interesting fact about the history of Velvet is that to date its origins are unclear, unlike many other popular fabrics where the origins are known. “Scholars from all over the world have discussed and debated for many years. It is now a general belief this fabric, originally made of silk, arrived in Italy for the first time from the Far East, transported by Arab merchants, and was then spread throughout Europe, in turn, by the merchants from Lucca, Venice, Florence, and Genoa (TextileAsArt.com).”

How to Measure Your Window for Drapes

The most common question we have here at Factory Drapes is how to measure a window so you know what size drape to order. You can follow these steps to get the correct measurements for your next drape.

1.) If you already have a rod, then the width will be based on that rod. Measure the area only where the drape will be hanging. If there are any decorative pieces on the end then do not include that in the measurement of the width. Measure tip to tip for rods without decorative ends.

2.) If you do not have a rod, then add 6 inches to the total width of the window. For example, if the window is 96 inches you will want a drape that is 102” inches. This is our standard recommendation but this can change depending on the style you select and the look you are trying to achieve.

3.) For the height of the window, we recommend 4 inches above and a minimum of 4 inches below. Again, depending on what style you are going for this will vary.

4.) If you would like full-length drapes then you will want to have the drape stop an inch before the floor.

Note: Our factory will add the width needed to wrap around the side and to overlap in the center of pinch pleated drapes.

But first, what are Blackout Drapes (sometimes referred to as dim-out drapes)? They are Drapes that are designed to not allow any light to come through the fabric allowing you total control over the light in a room. 6. Longer Lasting. On average a Blackout drape will last 10-15 years longer because it is more resilient to sunlight then a normal fabric.

7. Blocks outside noise. Live on a busy street or have noisy neighbors?

8. Looks Better. When blackout lining is added to your drapes it adds more weight. The extra weight helps the drapes hang nicer and gives it more graceful full folds.

9. Home Entertainment. Do you have a room where you consider your theater room or a family room with a big television? Blackout drapes do a wonderful job at helping create that movie theater atmosphere.

Bamboo Drapes
Bamboo fabric is woven from the pulp of bamboo grass. Bamboo crops are unique in the sense that they do not require pesticides or herbicides in order to thrive which makes it very easy to be kept as organic.

Organic Bamboo fabrics most notable qualities are:

1. Good insulating fabric
2. Wrinkle free
3. People who have allergic reactions to wool or hemp often do not have one with bamboo.
4. Naturally has antibacterial qualities

We currently have one Bamboo material; Organic Bamboo White Semi Sheer.

Hemp Drapes
Hemp has been around for thousands of years! In your minds eye you may think of Hemp as a course fabric but with modern processing it is now smooth enough to wear as clothing.

Hemp fabric is characterized by:

3. Resistant to UV rays and is a great insulator.

Organic Cotton comes from non-genetically modified crops and is certified to be grown without the use of synthetic chemicals. Organic Cotton has some unique qualities that have made these fabrics very popular.

1. Has a pleasant matte luster.
